Update on metal-on-metal hips

There has been a lot of media interest in the last few months. Two documentaries were aired on TV recently, one in Australia, and the other on Channel 4 in the UK. They concentrated on the ASR devices made by DePuy and talked about the problems experienced by some patients. Fortunately most orthopaedic surgeons have stopped using the devices that have performed badly. Hip resurfacing is still a good option for younger males with relatively normal hip anatomy, and there are some excellent 10 year results. It seems to be the case that large diameter metal head hip replacements from most manufacturers are not doing well, although this is very controversial at the moment. Some manufacturers insist that their devices are performing well. The Joint Registries will hopefully produce relevant data for us to look at so that we are better able to make informed decisions about which devices to use in the future.
