Sex and hip surgery

This has been a bit of a taboo subject for patients and surgeons alike. Most surgeons would advise that it is safe to have sex six weeks after a hip replacement, but care should be taken to avoid extreme movements and positions. Much of the advice that we give is based on evidence published many years ago, and is concerned with avoiding dislocation of the hip replacement. When these studies were done most patients having hip replacement surgery were much older than today and perhaps their expectations were different.  Modern hip replacements, particularly those using large diameter ceramics and resurfacing, are much less likely to dislocate even under extreme conditions. We believe that these types of hip replacements will allow patients much better function in all respects.  We have developed an outcome measure to see what patients expect in terms of sexual function after hip replacement surgery, and whether or not the operation allows them to achieve their goals. The study has been started in Sydney where one of our registrars is doing a clinical fellowship, and we are hoping to start a similar study in Southampton very soon. The results will help us to give our patients (and their partners) much more explicit advice about this important topic. If you would like to discuss this please get in touch.
