Metal Hips Research Group

I have brought together a group of UK hip surgeons who have a particular interest in metal on metal (MoM) hips. Between us we have done several thousand hip replacements and resurfacings, which we believed would give our patients excellent pain relief and improved mobility. Unfortunately we have seen increasing problems with some MoM devices, one of which has been withdrawn form the market. Duncan Whitwell from Oxford and I held the inaugural meeting in June 2010 and we will have our first scientific meeting in November. Our aims are to bring together experts in the field of hip surgery and engineering so that we may pool our resources and work to solve one of the biggest challenges in orthopaedic surgery. In time we hope that the MHRG will become a valuable resource for patients, surgeons and the orthopaedic industry. A website www.metalhips.com is under construction and will go live very soon.
